E-mail Print

It's hard to believe but the 2014/15 season is nearly over.  With only two club cross-country events left and the State Half Marathon this Sunday, it won't be long before the spikes are out and we are on the track and in the field for another summer season of competition.  So a few important things to note....

Vale, Mineko Kearns

E-mail Print

It is with extreme sadness that the club advises members of the passing of Mineko Kearns, the wife of ANSW & Illawong Athletics Life Member, former President and club stalwart, Ian Kearns.

Mineko passed early on Wednesday after being diagnosed with a serious medical condition in 2012.

On behalf of all members of the club, the Committee has expressed their deepest sympathies to Ian and Mineko's family, and that our thoughts are with them all at such a sad and distressing time.

All those associated with Illawong Athletics who know Ian and Mineko that would like to pay their respects are advised that a service will be held this coming Wednesday, 22 July at 11am South Chapel, Woronora Cemetery (Linden Street, Sutherland).

For the past two years Mineko had been a palliative care outpatient at Calvary Health Care at their hospital at Kogarah and received exceptional care.

For this reason it is Ian's wish that any of you who feel so inclined make a donation to Calvary (see http://www.calvary-sydney.org.au/support-us.html) rather than sending flowers.  We believe that there will also be an opportunity to donate money at Mineko’s service.

Rest in peace, Mineko.

Michael Dooley Takes Out Top Honour at ANSW Awards Night

E-mail Print

Congratulations to Michael Dooley on being named Athletics NSW International Senior Coach of the Year.

Michael received his award at the annual gala awards dinner, this year held at The Novotel, Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday night.

Michael was up against distance coaching legend Sean Williams and clearly had more points on the board: 3 athletes to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, 4 to the inaugural World Relays and, 2 for the Youth Olympics where Jess Thornton took Gold and Sam Geddes Bronze.

Also nominated on the night was Sam Geddes in the Junior Sprint/Hurdles.  Sam was pipped by fellow Dooley stable-mate and co-Youth Olympics medalist Jess Thornton.

Tay-Leiha Clark was nominated in the Junior Jumper award and was runner-up to outstanding pole vaulter Jack Hicking.

Congratulations to all three for their well deserved recognition.

Here's Michael with some of his athletes at the award dinner.  A very well deserved award!
